Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is set to undergo surgery after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, the French club has confirmed.
PSG announced the development on Wednesday following the Georgian international’s withdrawal from Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Barcelona.
Kvaratskhelia sustained the injury before the hour mark while tracking back to challenge a Barcelona player. He was unable to put weight on his right leg and was assisted off the pitch by medical staff.
The diagnosis confirmed fears over the severity of the injury, dealing a major setback to the winger, who has been in impressive form for the French champions.
The club also reported injuries to forward Ousmane Dembélé and Brazilian defender Marquinhos, further increasing concerns over the team’s fitness ahead of its upcoming fixtures.
Dembélé suffered a muscle injury to his left thigh during the first half, while Marquinhos sustained an injury to his right thigh after the break.
According to PSG’s medical update, both players will remain under medical supervision over the coming weeks as they continue their recovery.
The three injuries present a significant selection challenge for manager Luis Enrique as PSG prepare for upcoming domestic and European matches.
Kvaratskhelia’s return date will depend on the outcome of his surgery and progress during rehabilitation. The club has yet to provide a specific recovery timeline for the Georgian winger.
