Nigerian Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he avoids excessively flaunting his wealth and achievements on social media, saying he does not want to put young people under pressure.
The singer made this known during an interview with Jam FM, where he noted that many young people admire him and aspire to achieve similar success in their own lives.
Rema said he understands that he serves as a role model to many young people and is therefore careful about how he displays his lifestyle online.
According to him, seeing someone of a similar age achieve significant success can make others feel pressured to rush their own journey.
“A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are my fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured,” he said.
The singer added that although some people have advised him not to worry about whether his lifestyle puts pressure on others, he remains concerned that his displays of wealth could be misinterpreted.
Rema also spoke about the pressure children face from their parents, particularly when they are encouraged to study courses or pursue careers they do not enjoy because of the prospect of securing well-paying jobs.
He said he does not want young people to compare themselves with him or feel compelled to achieve success before their time.
“I just care about the kids who are under pressure. Parents do that as well. Parents compare a lot. Parents put a lot of kids under pressure,” he stated.
Explaining his preference for a relatively simple lifestyle, Rema said he enjoys wearing streetwear and does not frequently wear designer clothing.
He noted that his chains and watches are among the few aspects of his lifestyle that could be considered lavish.
The singer’s comments highlight the pressure young people may experience when comparing their lives with the achievements and lifestyles of celebrities on social media.
