Nigeria Labour Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike as Talks With FG End in Deadlock

Nigeria’s organised labour movement has warned of possible nationwide industrial action following the failure of negotiations with the Federal Government over workers’ demands.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) met government representatives in Abuja on Thursday, but the discussions ended without a concrete agreement to address the unions’ concerns.

The unions are demanding a reduction in petrol prices to levels recorded in 2024, a renegotiation of the national minimum wage, implementation of agreed tax relief measures and settlement of outstanding welfare issues affecting public-sector employees and health workers.

Following the inconclusive meeting, labour leaders gave the Federal Government until Tuesday, October 27, to demonstrate meaningful progress on the demands.

The unions have also directed their affiliates and state councils to begin preparations for possible industrial action should negotiations fail to produce an acceptable outcome.

The Federal Government reportedly requested that the next meeting be postponed to allow relevant ministers and heads of government agencies to participate in the discussions.

Despite the growing tension, the unions have not declared a nationwide strike over the latest dispute. The possibility of industrial action will depend on the outcome of the next round of negotiations and whether the government makes progress on labour’s demands.

The dispute comes amid continuing concerns over the cost of living, fuel prices, workers’ purchasing power and welfare conditions across the public sector.

The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting could therefore prove decisive in determining whether both sides reach a compromise or organised labour moves towards a nationwide shutdown.
