President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, following the death of her mother, Professor Kamene Okonjo, at the age of 96.

The renowned sociologist and women’s rights advocate died on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Okonjo royal family of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State.

Tinubu described the late professor as a distinguished scholar and advocate for women’s empowerment, acknowledging her contributions to education, society and community development.

The President also recognised her commitment to advancing the welfare of women and promoting intellectual development throughout her life.

Professor Kamene was the wife of the late Obi Chukwuka Okonjo, a former traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, and the mother of the kingdom’s current monarch.

In remembering her life, the family highlighted her intellectual accomplishments, humility, compassion and lifelong dedication to improving the lives of women.

Her work as a sociologist and advocate for women’s rights formed an important part of her legacy, which the family says will continue to inspire future generations.

Meanwhile, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has expressed gratitude to those who offered condolences following her mother’s death.

She said her mother had lived a quality life and that the family was thankful to have had her for so many years.
