The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Imo State University (ASUU-IMSU) has said its indefinite strike will continue until the authorities address its outstanding welfare demands and provide clear commitments to resolving the dispute.
The union is demanding the implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, alongside the payment of outstanding salaries, allowances and promotion arrears. It is also seeking written assurances that members will not face victimisation over their participation in the industrial action.
ASUU-IMSU said the outstanding issues must be resolved before the strike can be suspended, maintaining that concrete commitments are necessary to restore confidence in negotiations.

The union has also rejected examinations conducted during the industrial action, raising concerns about the validity of the exercises and their implications for students’ academic progress.
The dispute has placed the university’s academic calendar under further pressure, with students facing uncertainty over examinations, the completion of academic activities and the timing of a return to normal teaching.
Despite maintaining its position, ASUU-IMSU said it remained open to negotiations with the relevant authorities. However, the union insists that discussions must produce tangible outcomes rather than assurances without clear implementation plans.
The standoff leaves the university community awaiting a resolution that addresses the lecturers’ demands while limiting further disruption to students. The union’s position is that the strike will remain in force until its welfare concerns are addressed and clear timelines for fulfilling the demands are established.
