Arsenal Suffer Shock League Cup Exit as Fourth-Tier Fleetwood Win on Penalties

Arsenal suffered a stunning League Cup exit after fourth-tier Fleetwood Town defeated Mikel Arteta’s side 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their fourth-round clash on Tuesday.

The Premier League title contenders were unable to overcome their lower-league opponents at Highbury Stadium, with Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saving Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty before Conor Haughey converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a memorable victory for the hosts.

Fleetwood took the lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi in the 21st minute after capitalising on a defensive error by Arsenal teenager Marli Salmon. The forward powered past the young defender before firing a low effort beyond debutant goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Arsenal dominated possession as they searched for an equaliser, but struggled to turn their control into clear-cut opportunities. Arteta responded by introducing Martin Odegaard at half-time, and the move paid off when Viktor Gyokeres restored parity five minutes into the second half. The Swedish striker finished from close range after receiving a ball from Ceadach O’Neill.

The match remained level despite Arsenal’s attempts to find a winner, and the visitors’ task became more difficult when 16-year-old Max Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for violent conduct after kicking out at Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal following a challenge. Arteta appeared unhappy with the decision and spoke sternly to the teenager as he left the pitch.

Both teams converted their first three penalties in the shoot-out before Lynch denied Guimaraes. Haughey then held his nerve to score Fleetwood’s decisive kick, sending the home supporters into celebrations and completing one of the competition’s biggest upsets.

Arteta’s decision to make nine changes following Arsenal’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday came under scrutiny after the defeat. Only Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gyokeres retained their places from that match, while teenagers Dowman and Salmon started and 18-year-old winger O’Neill made his debut.

Fleetwood, nicknamed the “Cod Army”, had entered the game in 18th place in League Two after losing their previous two league matches against Exeter and Cheltenham. Despite their struggles in the league, Matt Lawlor’s side showed determination against their more illustrious opponents. The game was also briefly delayed by eight minutes after an unauthorised drone flew over the stadium.

The defeat adds to a list of painful cup exits in Arsenal’s history, including their League Cup loss to fourth-tier Bradford City on penalties in 2012. The Gunners also suffered an FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest in 2022, when the club were in the Championship, and lost to second-tier Southampton in the competition last season.

Fleetwood’s victory will nevertheless be remembered as a landmark moment for the club, with manager Matt Lawlor reportedly overcome with emotion as supporters flooded the pitch to celebrate. For Arsenal, the result represents a major setback after their recent progress in the Premier League and leaves Arteta facing questions over his team selection and performance.
