The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has described the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as “dead on arrival” following a dispute over the venue for a town hall meeting attended by Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The APC, through its Campaign Council spokesperson, Steve Oruruo, accused the opposition party of making misleading claims after it alleged that the Enugu State Government pressured Amadeo Event Centre to withdraw approval for the meeting.
The NDC had claimed that the venue’s approval was withdrawn shortly before the scheduled event, raising allegations of political interference and attempts to frustrate its activities in the state.
However, the event centre reportedly disputed the account, saying the facility had not been booked directly by the NDC. It explained that the reservation was made through an individual representing a medical organisation and that the arrangement violated its booking terms.
Despite the disagreement over the venue, the town hall meeting eventually took place, with Obi and Kwankwaso addressing supporters and residents.
Reacting to the controversy, Oruruo maintained that the NDC’s allegations were unfounded and urged its leaders to apologise to the people of Enugu State.
He also called on political parties to focus their campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections on policy proposals, ideas and records of leadership rather than allegations and political disputes.
The exchange has added to the growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with questions surrounding the venue controversy and the competing accounts from the parties remaining part of the debate.
