Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has confirmed that the wife of former governor Peter Obi is the godmother of one of his children, clarifying the relationship between their families following public discussions over their political differences.
Soludo also disclosed that his wife, Nonye, is the confirmation godmother of Obi’s daughter, explaining that the families maintain a cordial relationship despite their differing political positions.
The governor made the clarification during an interview with BBC News Igbo on Monday, describing Obi as a close friend and dismissing suggestions that their political disagreements had affected relations between their families.
“Peter Obi and I are good friends. Our two families are on good terms. His wife was the godmother of my child at baptism, and my wife was the godmother of his child at confirmation,” he said.
Soludo explained that the disagreement between them was mainly political, particularly over their preferences for who should govern Anambra State.
He said he understood that Obi had the right to support his preferred candidate during the governorship contest, stressing that he did not take the decision personally.
“I have a different vision of who should be governor of Anambra State. I am contesting, and he supported whoever he felt should be governor. I prevailed by the grace of God, and I don’t hold it against him,” the governor said.
The clarification comes months after public disagreement over the relationship between the two political families attracted attention in September.
Soludo’s remarks highlight the distinction he draws between personal relationships and political disagreements, maintaining that their families have remained on good terms despite their differences over Anambra’s political leadership.
