The 2027 Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia, has been postponed from January to December 2027 following security concerns and logistical challenges linked to developments in the Middle East.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced the decision on Tuesday, citing exceptional circumstances in the region, substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions.

The tournament was initially scheduled to run from January 7 to February 5, 2027. However, it will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.

In a statement, the AFC said its organising committee had approved the revised schedule following developments in the region.

“The organising committee for AFC Asian Cup approved rescheduling the flagship national team tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region,” the governing body said.

The AFC added that the new dates would be submitted to FIFA for approval, while stressing that the decision followed extensive discussions and consultations with Saudi officials.

The postponement comes amid growing security concerns following Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Several major sporting events scheduled to take place in the country have also been cancelled or postponed in recent weeks.

Saudi organisers had insisted last month that preparations for the continental football competition remained on schedule despite growing uncertainty over whether the tournament would proceed as planned.

Explaining the decision, the AFC said the exceptional circumstances had created significant challenges for organising and delivering the competition within the original timeframe.

“Exceptional circumstances have been created for the organisation and delivery of the competition as originally scheduled, making the postponement necessary in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders,” it said.

The month-long tournament is expected to be staged across three Saudi cities: Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.

The Asian Cup is the continent’s flagship national team football competition, bringing together national teams from across Asia to compete for the continental title.
