The Abia State Government Eye Health Management Bureau has raised alarm over a rising number of glaucoma cases in the state, reporting 6,381 confirmed cases in the past 28 months. Authorities are warning residents against unqualified practitioners and dangerous treatments, including the use of urine as a home remedy.

The warning came during the 2026 Glaucoma Week symposium held in Umuahia on Thursday, where the Bureau’s Administrator, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi, stressed that glaucoma is an irreversible eye disease that can only be effectively managed through early detection and routine check-ups.

Quack Eye Doctors and Harmful Remedies a Growing Threat

Dr. Emeka-Obasi appealed to residents to avoid quack eye doctors, emphasizing that many cases of vision loss are preventable with proper medical care. She called on traditional rulers, religious groups, and community leaders to support efforts in curbing unsafe practices.

“Many productive-age residents have been affected, but early diagnosis and continuous monitoring remain key to preventing irreversible blindness,” she said.

Thousands Benefit from Free Eye Checks and Surgeries

The Bureau revealed that 2,000 persons underwent sight-restoring surgeries after early glaucoma detection, while 13,500 residents benefited from free eye examinations across the state. Dr. Emeka-Obasi warned that the total number of glaucoma cases is likely to rise as more individuals undergo screening.

Health Commissioner Reaffirms Ban on Quacks

Abia State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, reiterated that the ban on quack eye doctors and unauthorized free medical outreaches remains in effect. Authorities are intensifying awareness campaigns to prevent avoidable vision loss and safeguard public health.
