New military training facility planned at Abia Airport project location as Air Force praises state’s improving security climate.
Story:
A major military development is underway in southeastern Nigeria after Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, approved 100 hectares of land for the establishment of a Nigerian Air Force training base within the Abia Airport project site.
The proposed facility will be operated by the Nigerian Air Force through its Air Force Ground Training Command, marking what officials describe as a strategic step toward strengthening security infrastructure in the region.
The decision comes after the Air Force initially requested 50 hectares for the project. Governor Otti, however, approved twice that size, allocating 100 hectares to accommodate the planned training complex.
According to Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Kehinde, the state’s improving security landscape played a significant role in the military’s interest in establishing a training hub there.
He noted that Abia currently enjoys a stronger level of security stability compared with several other states in the South-East, making it suitable for a major training command.
Officials also confirmed that the airport runway being developed through a collaboration between the federal and state governments will support the Air Force’s operational activities once the base becomes functional.
Governor Otti further assured military authorities that the Certificate of Occupancy for the land would be issued within 30 days, while renovation works on the Air Force office in the state are expected to be completed before April.
If completed as planned, the facility could position Abia as a key training and operational hub for the Nigerian Air Force in the Southeast, potentially strengthening regional security and attracting new economic and infrastructure development.
For many residents, attention is now turning to the broader impact the project could have on security, aviation development, and economic growth in the state.
