
Police in Abia State have arrested a young man, Edward Okorie, over the alleged killing of his girlfriend, a nurse identified as Sophy Chika, following a violent altercation in Ohafia.
The incident reportedly occurred in the couple’s shared apartment in Ohafia Local Government Area, sending shockwaves through the community.
Sophy Chika, said to be from Abam in Arochukwu LGA of Abia State, was living with Okorie, an indigene of Ohafia LGA, at the time of the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed what sparked the altercation that allegedly led to her death.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed the arrest, stating that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia had briefed headquarters on the development.
Police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia for a detailed investigation.
Abia State Police Command assured that a thorough probe is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the nurse’s death.
Investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events and possible motive as part of ongoing inquiries.
In a related development, the SCID in Umuahia has also launched an investigation into another domestic homicide case.
According to police, a woman in Umuahia allegedly stabbed her husband, Mr. Chidiebere James, to death with scissors after reportedly discovering messages on his phone.
DSP Chinaka confirmed the incident on Tuesday, noting that both cases are under active investigation.
The twin tragedies have intensified concerns over rising cases of domestic violence in Abia State, with authorities urging residents to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes.
