Residents of Abuja face strict movement restrictions from 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, as part of measures to secure the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the upcoming area council elections. The directive was issued by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and approved by President Bola Tinubu.
Authorities described the restriction as essential to maintain security and ensure the smooth conduct of Saturday’s polls. The move also coincides with the declaration of Friday as a work-free day to allow residents to prepare for and participate in the elections.
Security agencies have been deployed across Abuja to enforce compliance with the restrictions. Residents are advised to remain indoors during the curfew period, with exceptions granted only to accredited electoral officials and voters.
“The cooperation of residents is critical to guaranteeing a peaceful, credible electoral process,” a government spokesperson said, urging citizens to follow instructions and report any suspicious activity.
The FCT area council elections are expected to attract significant voter turnout across all six councils. Authorities have emphasised that these measures are temporary but necessary to safeguard voters, protect electoral staff, and prevent disruptions during polling.
