ADC Accuses Akpabio of Crafting Electoral Act to Favor APC, Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of shaping the 2026 Electoral Act to benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.

The criticism comes after Akpabio, speaking at a reception for Remi Tinubu in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, said he takes pride whenever opposition parties criticize legislation passed by the Senate. He specifically dismissed objections to the Electoral Act 2026, claiming that opposition disapproval validated the law’s correctness.

ADC Slams Electoral Law as Anti-Democratic

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described Akpabio’s remarks as evidence that the new electoral law was engineered to favor the ruling party.

Abdullahi criticized provisions of the law that, he said, shield dishonesty, weaken opposition parties, and undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy. He specifically highlighted the removal of certificate forgery as a valid ground for contesting election results.

“The comments credited to Senate President Akpabio show that the Electoral Act was designed to please the ruling party and President Tinubu,” Abdullahi said.

He warned that Akpabio would face historical judgment for imposing a law that diminishes democratic accountability.

Opposition Denounces Senate’s Logic

According to the ADC, Akpabio’s claim that legislation provoking opposition outrage validates the law’s correctness exposes the subterfuge behind the Electoral Amendment. The party stressed that such a law prioritizes political expediency over fairness, eroding trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.

“The embedded logic of this statement exposes the subterfuge behind the entire business of the Electoral Amendment. It was all designed to make the ruling party and the President happy,” the statement read.
