The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the National Assembly to ensure that the Electoral Amendment Act mandates real-time electronic transmission of election results without exceptions, warning that any loopholes could undermine public confidence and the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement on Wednesday, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi emphasized that credible elections depend on clear, unambiguous legal guarantees rather than mere assurances.
The party urged lawmakers to remove any provisions in the current bill that could allow manipulation or abuse, and to align the final version with the Conference Committee’s recommendations advocating for e-transmission of results.
“Only an Electoral Amendment Act that unequivocally mandates real-time electronic transmission of results, without exceptions capable of abuse, can command public confidence and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement read.
The ADC warned that any ambiguity, discretionary powers, or technical loopholes in the transmission and collation of election results fundamentally threaten the electoral process and cannot be accepted in good conscience. The party reiterated its commitment to standing with Nigerians in defense of transparent, credible, and verifiable elections.
