Ademola Lookman has opened up on the emotional toll of Nigeria’s heartbreaking exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, admitting that the Super Eagles’ penalty shootout loss to Morocco was especially painful after an exhausting contest.
Nigeria were eliminated in the semi-finals following a tense 120-minute battle that ended goalless before Morocco edged the Super Eagles on penalties.
“It was a tough game,” Lookman told reporters. “We played for 120 minutes. It was physically and mentally draining, but losing on penalties makes it even harder.”
The winger acknowledged the quality of the Moroccan side, describing them as a strong and well-organised team that pushed Nigeria to the limit.
“They’re a strong team,” he said. “At the end of the day, it came down to penalties.”
Still reeling from the disappointment, Lookman admitted he had not yet turned his attention to Nigeria’s third-place playoff clash against Egypt.
“To be honest, I haven’t really thought about it yet,” he said. “The disappointment is still there.”
The Super Eagles will face Egypt on Saturday, with the opportunity to finish the tournament on a positive note and secure a podium place after falling short of a place in the final.
