The Agbekoya Farmers Society of Nigeria has mobilised hundreds of its members to strategic villages and communities in Oyo State to tackle rising insecurity, including banditry, kidnappings, and other criminal activities.
The deployment follows an emergency security meeting held in Ibadan on Sunday, amid growing concern over the movement of a notorious wanted man in Saki, located in the Oke Ogun region. Reports indicate that the suspect’s presence in the area has heightened fear among residents.
In a communique signed by the group’s National Public Relations Officer, Deacon Olatunji Bandele, and the Oyo State Governor of Agbekoya, High Chief Olatunde Bello Ashagidigbi, the society expressed deep concern over escalating insecurity nationwide.
The statement noted recent attacks in Kwara, Kogi, Kebbi, and Borno States and highlighted the importance of proactive intervention at the community level. Agbekoya stressed that its trained personnel will work closely with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and prevent similar incidents in Oyo State.
“Agbekoya condemns the breakdown of Nigeria’s security architecture, which has exposed our villages, communities, and schools to attacks by suspected bandits and criminal herdsmen. Proactive leadership and stronger collaboration between government and communities are crucial,” the communique read.
The group urged Southwest governors to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property, emphasizing the urgent need to reassure anxious citizens. Agbekoya reaffirmed its commitment to protecting farmers, farmlands, and rural communities across Oyo State through strategic collaboration with security agencies.
