Suspect accused of posing as American doctor, using fake bank platform and cryptocurrency channels to defraud victims
Operatives of the Airport Police Command in Lagos have arrested a 24-year-old man over his alleged role in a romance fraud scheme valued at about N48.5 million (approximately $35,000).
Police said the suspect was intercepted on Monday while attempting to board a flight to Asaba, following intelligence gathered by the Anti-Fraud Unit.
The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Adeola, confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying preliminary investigations link the suspect to a fraud syndicate that has operated online since 2023.
Fake identity and fabricated online bank platform
Investigators allege that the suspect used the alias “Travis Kevin,” presenting himself on social media as a white American medical doctor to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims on platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
He was also said to have created a counterfeit online banking interface displaying false account balances to make his claims appear legitimate.
According to police, victims were persuaded to send money after the suspect claimed he had sustained injuries while on duty and urgently needed funds for feeding and medical supplies, promising repayment.
The funds were allegedly routed through cryptocurrency channels to avoid detection.
Wider syndicate under investigation
ASP Adeola said the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mrs Olufunke Ogunbode, has ordered a full-scale investigation and directed officers to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.
“The Commissioner reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for criminal activities within the aviation environment, noting that airports are critical facilities that must not be used for illegal operations,” he said.
Police added that the suspect will be handed over to the Interpol unit for further investigation and possible prosecution.
