Former First Lady, Dr. Aisha Buhari, has revealed that powerful aides around her late husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, manipulated his perception of her, causing him to lock his doors and disrupt her carefully managed dietary regime.
The revelations appear in the new biography, “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari”, authored by Dr. Charles Omole and launched at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
Aisha Buhari explained that her husband suffered from a long history of malnutrition, which she had managed meticulously through tailored meals and nutritional supplements for over six years before his presidency. She described a strict regimen of vitamins, oils, proteins, and cereals that ensured his health remained stable.
However, she claims that after moving into the presidential villa, the “machinery of the presidency” took control of their private lives. According to her account, some aides and associates began planting suspicions into the president’s mind, alleging that she intended to harm him.
“She started hearing gossip and fear-mongering. They said I wanted to kill him,” Aisha Buhari is quoted in the book. “He believed them for a week or so. He started locking his room, changed small habits, and my routine was disrupted.”
The former First Lady added that mismanagement of Buhari’s meals caused him to lose weight, skip lunches, and compromise his health. She stressed that contrary to circulating rumors, her husband was not poisoned, and there were no exotic fevers or attacks, only a disruption in his nutritional care.
“When he was rushed to London, the doctors prescribed an even stronger supplement regimen than what I had been giving him,” she said.
Aisha Buhari’s account provides a detailed insight into the challenges she faced managing the president’s health while navigating palace politics and powerful individuals influencing presidential aides.
