The Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended Chief Monday Esu, the Village Head of Ikot Umo Essien in Essien Udim Local Government Area, over alleged acts of terrorism and activities threatening public peace.
The suspension, which will last six months, was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, who said the move was necessary to allow for a comprehensive investigation into the serious allegations against the traditional ruler.
According to the state government, Chief Esu is accused of sponsoring acts of vandalism and theft targeting government-funded facilities, including newly constructed shops at the Ikot Ekpenyong community market, a project facilitated by former federal lawmaker Nsikak Ekong in February 2024.
Archibong further revealed that the alleged culprits destroyed a Fadama-sponsored borehole and VIP lavatory within the same market area, stealing materials such as aluminium roofing sheets, windows, doors, overhead tanks, water pumps, and a generator.
“These actions pose a serious threat to peace, security, and development within the community. The government will not tolerate any form of lawlessness or sabotage,” Archibong stated.
The commissioner added that the suspension of the village head was part of the government’s broader efforts to maintain peace and accountability among traditional institutions across Akwa Ibom.
The state government has assured residents that those found guilty after the investigation will face appropriate disciplinary and legal consequences.
