Akwa Ibom to take control of power market as Gov Eno unveils electricity reforms

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has announced plans to take greater control of the state’s electricity market, as part of ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s persistent power challenges.

The governor said his administration is working on a roadmap to improve electricity supply across the state, citing the nationwide problem of low power generation as a key factor affecting Akwa Ibom’s energy situation.

His remarks were contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Aniekan Umanah, following the governor’s March Projects Delivery Meeting held at the Banquet Hall, Government House in Uyo on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Governor Eno outlined reforms aimed at repositioning the state to manage and expand its own power market.

“The Governor also addressed the state’s electricity situation, outlining ongoing reforms and clear roadmaps for Akwa Ibom State to take ownership of its power market,” the statement read.

The governor also disclosed that his administration is engaging key stakeholders in the power sector to improve electricity supply and ensure more reliable energy delivery to residents.

Beyond the power sector, Governor Eno directed the formation of an inter-ministerial committee tasked with ensuring the completion and commissioning of Youth Friendly Centres across the state.

He further urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to strengthen collaboration in order to enhance service delivery and ensure the timely execution of government projects.

The planned reforms form part of broader efforts by the state government to improve infrastructure, boost development, and address critical challenges affecting residents.
