Joshua Chinedu Obika, the federal lawmaker representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has officially left the Labour Party (LP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obika formally announced his defection in a letter to the House of Representatives on Wednesday, citing unresolved leadership disputes within the LP as the main driver of his decision. According to him, the party’s ongoing crisis has created deep divisions and multiple factions, hampering its ability to function effectively.

“I write with profound respect to formally notify the Honourable House of my decision to defect from the LP to the APC. This decision has become necessary and inevitable due to the prolonged and unresolved leadership crises in the LP, which has resulted in deep divisions and the emergence of multiple factions,” Obika stated.

The lawmaker explained that attempts at reconciliation had failed, leaving the party weakened and unable to operate democratically. He highlighted the recent FCT Area Council elections as a clear example of the crisis’s impact, noting that LP candidates were not uploaded on the INEC portal, disenfranchising supporters and members.

“This unfortunate development has eroded confidence in the party leadership and organisational structure,” Obika added.

He also revealed that his decision was influenced by pressure and appeals from political allies and stakeholders within his constituency, who encouraged him to return to the APC.

Obika’s defection marks another significant political shift ahead of Nigeria’s evolving electoral landscape, highlighting ongoing instability within the Labour Party.
