A 26-year-old man alleged to be involved in the kidnapping and murder of Anambra lawmaker Justice Azuka has been arrested by police in the state, marking what authorities describe as a major breakthrough against organised violent crime.
The suspect, Ugochukwu Uzor, was taken into custody by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu during an operation in Ogbaru Local Government Area on 8 December. Police said he sustained injuries during a confrontation before being overpowered.
Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, was abducted on Christmas Eve 2024 while holidaying in Onitsha. His body was discovered two months later at the foot of the Second Niger Bridge despite widespread claims that ransom had been paid.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the arrested suspect confessed to taking part in both the abduction and murder. According to Ikenga, investigators have long linked Uzor to a network of violent gangs operating across Anambra and neighbouring states.
The police statement described him as a “dangerous criminal” with a history of armed attacks. Officers also noted tattoos on his body bearing the words “No Forgiveness” and “No Mercy”, which they say reflect his notoriety among criminal rings.
During the arrest, a locally made Beretta pistol and 11 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.
The command says the operation is expected to assist ongoing investigations aimed at dismantling criminal syndicates behind kidnappings and targeted killings in the state.
