Speculation over Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s political future has intensified in Plateau State, but the All Progressives Congress says he has not been admitted because he is yet to follow the party’s formal procedures.

Political groups across the state have spent the past week holding rallies and press briefings—some endorsing the idea of Mutfwang moving to the APC, others rejecting it outright. Senior party figures, including APC national chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, have publicly distanced themselves from the rumoured defection.

Mutfwang has also denied making any move, insisting that APC members are the ones pressuring him to join.

Speaking on the matter, Plateau APC chairman Rufus Bature said the governor must comply with the standard entry process.

“The governor should follow the proper channel. Let him consult with the leaders of the party first. We have leaders at the national level; he should meet with them,” Bature said.

He stressed that joining the APC requires negotiations and mutual understanding.

“There must be dialogue, give-and-take, for us to accept him. Let him come in a proper way. That is all we are saying.”

Bature added that the party needs clarity on the governor’s motives before any decision can be taken.

“If the terms and conditions are good for the party, they will accept him. But if we don’t know his intentions for coming into the party, that is where the issue arises.”

Despite the back-and-forth, Mutfwang is yet to formally notify the APC national leadership of any intention to defect.
