Former VP Seeks to Strengthen ADC and Build Public Confidence in Nigeria’s Democracy

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar paid a strategic courtesy visit to African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman, David Mark, at his Abuja residence on April 1, 2026. The engagement comes amid ongoing political realignments and efforts to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku described the meeting as productive and forward-looking, focusing on strategies to reposition the ADC and enhance public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process. Discussions reportedly explored ways to strengthen the party’s structure, mobilize stakeholders, and present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“This visit provided an opportunity to share ideas on how to further strengthen the ADC and restore confidence in Nigeria’s democracy,” Atiku tweeted.

Political Maneuvers Intensify Ahead of 2027 Polls

The ADC has recently been active in recruiting prominent political figures to broaden its influence. The party successfully welcomed ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and sent emissaries to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed to explore possible alliances.

Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who led the Bauchi delegation, criticized the APC’s governance and framed the ADC as the party capable of rescuing Nigeria from a looming crisis.

“The coming battle in 2027 to elect new leadership in Nigeria can only succeed if all elements of good intention unite,” Lawal said. “If we allow this government to continue post-2027, Nigeria will probably be no more.”

The meeting underscores the opposition’s intensified focus on coalition-building, as ADC positions itself as a key contender against the ruling party.
