A wave of violence has once again struck Plateau State as gunmen suspected to be Fulani militants attacked Kwi community in Riyom Local Government Area, killing at least seven people and leaving several others injured.
The attack, which occurred late Friday night around 10:30 p.m., threw the quiet farming community into chaos as residents fled for their lives.
Eyewitness Abel Gyang, a local resident, said the heavily armed assailants—numbering more than 50—stormed the village under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically and setting homes ablaze.
“It was a terrifying night for us in Kwi. The attackers came with sophisticated weapons and overpowered our local vigilantes. People ran into bushes and rocky hills for safety,” Gyang recounted.
“Seven people were killed, many others were injured, and calls for help to security operatives went unanswered.”
The victims, mostly villagers who had settled in for the night, were said to have been taken by surprise as the attackers moved swiftly through residential clusters.
Local sources said the assault lasted for over an hour before the gunmen retreated, leaving behind trails of blood and destruction.
Efforts to reach DSP Alabo Alfred, the Plateau State Police Command’s spokesperson, for official comments were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.
The latest violence adds to a long list of attacks that have rocked Riyom and other parts of Plateau State, a region that has faced years of deadly clashes between armed herders and farming communities.
Residents are now appealing to security agencies and the state government to strengthen surveillance and prevent further bloodshed.
