Police in Bauchi State have arrested a housewife accused of inflicting severe burns on her five-year-old stepdaughter in Magama Gumau, Toro Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Rabi Nuhu, allegedly pressed a hot object on the child’s thighs, abdomen, and buttocks after repeated complaints of bedwetting.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Wakil confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, revealing that the case was reported on 13 September 2025. He said the Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, has ordered the matter to be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet probe.
“The victim sustained burns on her lower abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. The culprit was immediately arrested, and the investigation is ongoing,” Wakil stated.
According to community activist Kabiru Mohammed, the child lost her biological mother a year ago and has since been living with her father and stepmother. He alleged that the girl had endured persistent violence at the hands of her stepmother.
“The girl confided in her uncle that her stepmother burnt her private part because she bedwets often. It was the uncle who raised the alarm and reported the matter to police,” Mohammed said, adding that the suspect often vented her marital frustrations on the child.
The victim’s father, Mohammad Umar, admitted that his wife frequently complained about the child’s bedwetting. He said he bought the girl a separate mattress to ease tensions at home but was shocked when he later discovered the burns.
“My wife initially claimed hot tea spilled on her, and I believed it until the truth came out,” Umar said.
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment while police continue investigations. Authorities have assured that justice will be pursued.
