Mumbai – Dharmendra, one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors and a defining figure of Indian cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, has passed away at the age of 89. The actor, whose career spanned more than six decades and over 300 films, died Monday after a period of hospitalisation in Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, calling Dharmendra a “phenomenal actor” whose charm and versatility left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. “The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people,” Modi wrote on social media.
Often referred to as Bollywood’s “He-Man”, Dharmendra was celebrated for his unique combination of action-hero charisma and romantic sensitivity. His performance in the 1975 blockbuster “Sholay”, widely regarded as one of India’s greatest films, solidified his place in cinematic history.
Beyond action films, Dharmendra shone in romantic comedies like “Chupke Chupke” (1975) and dramas such as “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” (1971), establishing himself as one of the most versatile actors of his generation. His on-screen chemistry with actress Hema Malini, his later spouse, captivated audiences in more than 20 films, becoming one of Bollywood’s most celebrated pairings.
Dharmendra’s personal life was marked by complexity. He remained married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children, including actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, even after marrying Malini in 1980. Together with Malini, he had two daughters, including Esha Deol, while his nephew Abhay Deol also entered the film industry.
In later years, Dharmendra transitioned to character-driven roles, often portraying paternal figures throughout the 1990s and 2000s. His final screen appearance was in the war biopic “Ikkis” (2025), demonstrating his enduring dedication to cinema until the end of his life.
Dharmendra’s death marks the end of an era for Bollywood, leaving behind a legacy of cinematic excellence, memorable performances, and a profound influence on generations of actors and audiences worldwide.
