Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, who was critically injured during the Bondi Beach terror attack in Sydney, has been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.

The 22-year-old officer, just four months into his service, was patrolling a Hanukkah festival when two gunmen opened fire, injuring over 40 people and killing 15. Constable Hibbert was shot in the head and shoulder, and has lost sight in one eye, his family confirmed.

“As a family, we couldn’t ask for anything more – having our Jack home, especially for Christmas, truly feels like a miracle,” the family said in a statement, thanking the public for their “overwhelming support” and praising medical staff for their “exceptional” care.

Even after being shot, Constable Hibbert continued to assist festival attendees until he could no longer physically intervene. His bravery has been widely recognised by colleagues who visited him in hospital.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described Hibbert as a “positive young man” and vowed that the force would support him fully, including assigning him “appropriate duties” once he recovers.

Constable Hibbert was one of two officers injured in the attack; Constable Scott Dyson, 25, remains in hospital.

Authorities allege that the suspected gunmen were inspired by Islamic State ideology and deliberately targeted the Jewish festival. Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one count of terrorism. His father, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by police at the scene.

Court documents reveal that the father-son duo “meticulously” planned the attack over several months, conducting reconnaissance at Bondi just two days before the shooting.
