BRT Bus Engulfed in Flames on Ikorodu Road, Lagos; Several Passengers Injured

A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle caught fire on Wednesday morning along Ikorodu Road in Lagos, leaving multiple passengers injured but avoiding fatalities.

The incident occurred as the bus was moving toward Majidun, forcing commuters to evacuate quickly. Eyewitnesses reported that while most passengers escaped safely, some sustained minor injuries amid the rush to exit the vehicle.

Shade Jimoh, a passenger, described the scene as terrifying. “It felt like something out of a horror movie. The bus was moving when flames suddenly started coming out from the engine area. People were shouting and trying to escape,” she said.

Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire erupted at approximately 6:30 a.m., near the Majidun Boma filling station. Responders received the emergency call at 6:48 a.m. and arrived on the scene by 7:01 a.m., swiftly bringing the flames under control.

While the precise cause of the fire remains under investigation, initial speculation points to a possible mechanical fault in the engine compartment. Passengers have expressed renewed concern over the safety standards of public transportation in Lagos.

Authorities are urging commuters to exercise caution and ensure compliance with safety guidelines while travelling on public transport.
