Brutal Supremacy Clash at Kano Wedding Leaves Three Dead, Sparks Citywide Panic

Three young men were brutally killed and dozens fled their homes after a violent clash erupted at a wedding ceremony in Kurna Kan Mayanka, Kano, on Sunday, May 12, 2024, igniting a wave of fear across the community. What began as a celebration quickly descended into a bloodbath when rival gangs hijacked the reception, wielding machetes and knives to assert grim dominance.

The victims have been identified as Sadiq Abdulkadir, 23, Muhammad Sani, 22, and Sadiq Abdullahi, 18. Abdullahi, a teenager from Karkasara quarters, was fatally struck by a police bullet as security forces scrambled to quell the violence.

Eyewitnesses recount a shocking scene. “Thugs brandishing dangerous weapons suddenly overran the event,” stated SP Haruna Kiyawa of the Kano police command. Within minutes, the idyllic wedding turned into a savage turf battle.

One bereaved father, Mallam Abdullahi Yasayyadi, described his anguish: he was attending school when a frantic call summoned him to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he confirmed his son’s death from a bullet wound to the stomach.

Meanwhile, in a separate but contemporaneous crackdown just weeks before – from June 13 to 15, 2025 – the Kano State Police arrested 51 suspected thugs and confiscated arms and drugs in major raids targeting criminal dens in Dala, Gwale, Tarauni, and crucially, Kurna and Rijiyar Lemo. It’s unclear if this operation touched the mastermind network behind the May infraction.

Local resident Sani Dambazau indicated tensions remain high: “Residents are still living in fear of reprisal attacks. Some have already abandoned their homes.” He also confirmed the assailants looted victims before fleeing – one tragic twist in an unfolding tragedy .

Despite urgent calls, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer DSP Hussaini Abdullahi was unreachable yesterday and no public statement has been issued by the Kano Police Command regarding the May wedding massacre.

Community leaders are now calling for stronger measures and more transparency in the investigation. As families bury their dead and tension rises, Kano faces a crucial test: can authorities dismantle these violent gang networks and restore peace before another celebration turns into a slaughter?
