Police in Cross River State say a father is in custody after his young daughter died on Wednesday evening, prompting renewed calls for action against domestic violence and child abuse.
Shock and grief have engulfed a Calabar neighbourhood after a 10-year-old girl died following an alleged assault by her father during a domestic dispute on Wednesday evening.
Police identified the suspect as Joseph Emmanuel, a middle-aged commercial motorcycle operator, who was arrested after the incident at Esit Ebom Street in Calabar South Local Government Area.
According to preliminary accounts, the incident followed an argument at the family home over a missing petrol pipe reportedly used for fuel transfer in the suspect’s business. When the item could not be located, the man questioned his daughter. Police say the situation escalated shortly afterwards.
Residents raised an alarm as the child became critically unwell. She was rushed for help but was later confirmed dead.
Angered by the incident, members of the community attempted to attack the suspect before police intervened and took him into custody.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpa, said officers from the Atakpa Police Station responded swiftly to prevent further violence.
“The suspect is currently in custody and assisting investigations,” the police spokesperson said. “He has admitted to the act but claimed it was not intentional and that he acted in anger.”
Police said the suspect received medical attention for injuries sustained during the attempted mob action, while the child’s body has been deposited at a morgue pending further procedures.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities say the suspect will be charged to court once the process is concluded.
The incident has reignited public concern over child protection, domestic violence and the dangers of unchecked anger within the home.
