Cebu City, Philippines – A massive landfill collapse at a waste segregation facility in Binaliw, Cebu City has killed one worker, injured at least seven others, and left dozens missing, authorities confirmed on Friday.

Rescue teams scrambled to the scene after a towering mound of garbage and debris collapsed, burying workers at the facility. Eight survivors were rescued, but one, a female worker, tragically died en route to the hospital, regional police director Brig. Gen. Roderick Maranan told the Associated Press.

The identities of the missing are still being verified. Conflicting reports suggest that while police confirmed 27 missing, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival indicated that 38 people remained unaccounted for, with 12 rescued. It remains unclear whether non-workers were affected in the disaster.

“All response teams remain fully engaged in search and retrieval efforts to locate the remaining missing persons, with strict adherence to safety protocols,” Mayor Archival said in a Facebook post.

Emergency teams are working under dangerous conditions to recover those trapped under the debris. The incident has raised concerns about safety standards at waste management facilities across the region.

Authorities are urging relatives and residents to stay clear of the disaster site to ensure rescue operations continue safely.
