CNN is venturing deeper into the world of fashion and culture with the appointment of Rachel Tashjian, the acclaimed fashion critic formerly with The Washington Post, as its new senior style reporter.
Tashjian, known for her sharp and witty takes on fashion, joins CNN under the supervision of Choire Sicha — the network’s recently appointed head of features. The move is part of CNN’s strategic push to strengthen its digital storytelling through new lifestyle and cultural verticals.
She will report to Fiona Sinclair Scott, CNN Style’s global editor, as part of a growing team focused on enhancing coverage beyond hard news and politics.
“I am absolutely stoked that I finally get to work with Rachel,” Sicha said in a statement. “She is a brilliant reporter who is also perfectly hilarious, insightful, curious, and empathetic — whether she’s writing about thrifting or Dior.”
The hire comes as CNN ramps up promotion for its forthcoming digital subscription platform, which promises subscribers unlimited access to global news, exclusive documentaries, and premium lifestyle content. CEO Mark Thompson has emphasized CNN’s commitment to evolving beyond traditional cable television by attracting new digital audiences.
Tashjian’s addition positions CNN to compete with media giants like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, both of which have invested heavily in fashion and cultural coverage.
Beyond her journalism career, Tashjian is also the creator of Opulent Tips — an invitation-only newsletter that offers shopping advice and style inspiration. Her arrival marks a significant step in CNN’s effort to blend journalism, entertainment, and fashion on a global scale.
