“Comedians Are Richer Than Musicians” — Shank Comics Sparks Debate with Bold Wealth Claim

Nigerian content creator Shank Comics has ignited fresh debate in the entertainment industry after suggesting that comedians quietly out-earn some of the country’s biggest music stars.

Popular skit maker and streamer Shank Comics has claimed that comedians in Nigeria may be significantly wealthier than musicians, despite the flashy lifestyles often associated with the music industry.

Speaking during a recent livestream, he argued that public perception is shaped largely by how entertainers display their wealth.

“Musicians show it, comedians invest it”

According to Shank, many Nigerians assume musicians are richer because they are more visible with luxury spending.

He pointed to high-profile comedians such as Bovi and Basketmouth, claiming they are wealthier than top Afrobeats stars but choose a different financial approach.

“I think there is more money in comedy than music. Bovi and Basketmouth are far richer than Asake, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and other musicians, but they prefer to invest rather than buy cars,” he said.

Afrobeats stars named in comparison

Shank’s comments referenced some of Nigeria’s biggest music exports, including Asake, Wizkid, and Burna Boy—artists widely known for their global success and luxurious lifestyles.

He argued that while musicians often showcase wealth through exotic cars and high-end living, comedians tend to prioritise long-term financial security.

Different lifestyles, different strategies

Expanding on his point, Shank suggested that comedians are generally more conservative with spending and more focused on investments.

“Comedians are very conscious of the future, so they invest more than they spend, and they don’t spend lavishly on luxuries,” he added.

He also insisted that many comedians could afford the same luxury items seen among musicians but deliberately choose not to.

Debate reignites over entertainment earnings

The remarks have since sparked conversations across social media, with fans and industry watchers weighing in on the long-running debate over earnings in Nigeria’s entertainment sectors.

While the music industry enjoys global visibility through Afrobeats, Nigeria’s comedy scene has grown into a powerful business ecosystem—driven by live shows, digital content, brand deals, and streaming platforms.

Whether Shank’s claims hold true remains open to debate, but one thing is clear: the conversation around money, fame, and strategy in entertainment is far from settled.
