Cooking Gas Prices Plunge 21% in August, Now Average ₦16,195 — NBS

Nigerian households got a measure of relief in August as the average cost of cooking gas dropped sharply by 21.42% compared with July, according to fresh figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The latest Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Price Watch Report shows that the average retail price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder fell to ₦16,195.07 in August 2025, down from ₦20,609.48 in July.

Despite the month-on-month drop, the report noted a modest year-on-year increase of 4.13% from ₦15,552.56 recorded in August 2024.

Price Differences Across States

Yobe State recorded the highest average price for a 12.5kg cylinder at ₦16,887.42, followed closely by Adamawa (₦16,872.40) and Ebonyi (₦16,859.17).

At the other end, Benue posted the lowest price at ₦15,102.50, with Borno (₦15,176.39) and Imo (₦15,177.58) also among the cheapest.

Across zones, the North-West had the highest average price at ₦16,358.15, followed by the South-East at ₦16,344.61, while the South-West recorded the lowest average at ₦15,865.17.

Smaller Cylinders Also Cheaper

The NBS report also showed a similar trend for smaller cylinders. The average price of refilling a 5kg cylinder dropped 22.32% month-on-month, from ₦8,243.79 in July to ₦6,404.02 in August.

On a year-on-year basis, the 5kg cylinder price saw a marginal 0.40% decline, compared to ₦6,430.02 in August 2024.

Katsina had the highest average retail price at ₦6,945.21, followed by Taraba (₦6,893.12) and Rivers (₦6,886.49). The cheapest prices were in Delta (₦5,657.50), Bauchi (₦5,721.75) and Borno (₦6,070.56).

The sharp fall in gas prices will come as welcome news for households and businesses struggling with the high cost of living. However, analysts warn that volatility in global energy markets and supply chain disruptions could keep prices unstable in the months ahead.
