Lagos, Nigeria – February 17, 2026 – Controversy continues to swirl around Afrobeats superstar Davido, whose decision to withdraw from his daughter Imade’s custody case has sparked a heated response from the law firm representing the child’s mother.
Davido, born David Adeleke, announced on Friday that he was discontinuing the legal proceedings, clarifying that he had sought joint custody rather than sole custody. He described the situation as a loss for his daughter, insisting that neither parent had “won” the case.
“I never asked for full custody … I asked for joint custody. Nobody won, nobody lost but Imade … so I don’t know why some people are celebrating. There’s nothing to celebrate,” the singer wrote on X.
The artist cited distressing courtroom events, including references to his late son, as the reason for his withdrawal. “I’ve decided to drop the case because … until she brought out her last card! MY DECEASED SON! THAT’S A NO NO! Lowest blow!” he posted. He added that his actions were driven by love and responsibility for his daughter.
Following Davido’s public outburst, the law firm representing Sophia, Imade’s mother, issued a formal statement defending its conduct. The firm warned against harassment of legal practitioners, stressing that the matter is sub judice and will be decided solely by the court.
“That matter is before a court of competent jurisdiction in Lagos State. No amount of media commentary will sway the process or our approach to the case,” the statement read. The firm highlighted that any attempt to intimidate lawyers outside the courtroom threatens the foundations of justice and the rule of law.
The statement, signed by the Management and Board of Partners, called on the Nigerian Bar Association and legal communities globally to condemn actions undermining judicial proceedings.
The custody dispute has attracted intense public attention, with fans urging peaceful co-parenting and respect for legal processes as both parties maintain their positions.
