Villagers flee in panic after fresh assault on farmers in Anwule, Benue State

A suspected herdsmen attack on Anwule community in Oglewu, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State has left several people feared dead and many others missing.

Residents say the attackers stormed farmlands on Monday, targeting villagers working in their fields. Witnesses described scenes of terror as the assailants, armed with machetes and other weapons, descended on the community.

“The attack came without warning — they started cutting down anyone they saw,” a survivor told Daily Post by phone.

The assault forced dozens of families to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighbouring villages across Benue. Locals say the roads leading to Anwule are now deserted, with homes and farms abandoned.

Authorities have yet to issue an official casualty figure, but community leaders fear the death toll could rise as search efforts continue for missing residents.

Benue State has long been a flashpoint for deadly clashes between farmers and herders, often triggered by disputes over land and grazing routes. Despite repeated calls for tighter security, many rural communities remain vulnerable to such attacks.

Local sources say security operatives have been alerted, though no arrests have been reported as of Tuesday morning.

The Benue Police Command and the state government are expected to comment on the incident in the coming hours.
