A massive fire has ripped through multiple towers at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, claiming at least four lives, including a firefighter. Emergency services say several residents remain trapped as the blaze spreads.
Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex of 1,984 flats housing around 4,000 people, is undergoing renovations, with bamboo scaffolding covering parts of the towers. Officials believe the fire may have spread rapidly through these structures.
Authorities responded swiftly after receiving the first reports at 14:51 local time (06:51 GMT) on Wednesday. The fire was escalated to a number 4 alert by 15:34. Dramatic footage shows towering flames and thick smoke engulfing the high-rise blocks.
Seven people have been hospitalized, two in critical condition, one stable, and four confirmed dead. Firefighters and residents alike suffered injuries during evacuation and suppression efforts, authorities said.
Temporary shelters have been established at Kwong Fuk Community Hall and the Tung Cheong Street Leisure Building, with a help desk set up at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. Residents can also call the government hotline on 2658 4040 for assistance.
The Tai Po District Office is monitoring the situation closely and stands ready to open additional shelters. Road closures, including a section of the Tai Po Highway, and bus diversions are in effect to facilitate emergency operations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet confirmed the number of people still inside the complex. Officials urge residents and the public to stay clear of the area as firefighters continue containment efforts.
