Deadly Car Explosion Rocks Delhi Near Red Fort, Killing 8 and Injuring Over 20

A massive car explosion shook one of Delhi’s busiest areas on Monday evening, leaving at least eight dead and more than 20 injured, according to local authorities. The blast, which occurred near the Red Fort metro station, sent shockwaves through the city and caused widespread panic.

The explosion was so powerful that nearby vehicles were severely damaged, with some appearing partially melted. Residents said the sound of the blast could be heard kilometres away, and chaos erupted immediately in the streets.

Horror and Panic on the Streets

Mohamed Hafiz, who lives less than 200 metres from the scene, described the aftermath as “terrifying”:

“There was blood everywhere. People were in shock. Cars were on fire, and some people were trying to help the injured. The scene was too disturbing – I could even see body parts.”

The explosion struck a densely populated and historic part of Delhi, sandwiched between Chandni Chowk, a major commercial hub, and the 17th-century Red Fort, a prime tourist attraction. The timing, during Delhi’s peak wedding season, meant streets were crowded with pedestrians and shoppers.

Authorities have declared a high alert across the city, with neighbouring states also increasing security measures. Police set up checkpoints and are searching vehicles at city borders to prevent further incidents.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Most roads around the blast site were deserted as residents and visitors stayed away from the area. Injured victims were rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital, where medical teams continue to treat them. Forensic teams are on-site, collecting evidence and investigating the cause of the explosion.

City officials have not yet confirmed whether the blast was accidental or deliberate, though the location and scale have shocked authorities and locals alike.

Delhi’s residents, many of whom have not experienced such violence in over a decade, are grappling with fear and confusion as police continue their investigation.
