Firefighters prevent potential explosion in Kura after gas tanker crash linked to driver fatigue.
A potential disaster was narrowly avoided in Kano State after an LPG tanker overturned along the busy Zaria Road in Kura Local Government Area without igniting or causing casualties.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the Imawa axis of the highway, prompting an emergency response from the Kano State Fire Service.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the control room received an alert about the accident from a staff member, Yusuf Musa Mazadu.
“Our control room received a distress call reporting an overturned LPG tanker at Imawa along Zaria Road in Kura Local Government Area,” the statement read.
Firefighters from the agency’s headquarters were immediately dispatched to the scene to prevent any fire outbreak, given the highly flammable nature of the tanker’s contents.
On arrival, responders found the tanker, bearing registration number KMC 39 XG and owned by Ultimate Gas Company, lying by the roadside.
Fortunately, the vehicle did not catch fire and no injuries were reported.
“Our men quickly took all necessary safety measures and ensured that the tanker was safely towed away without any fire outbreak,” Abdullahi said.
The Fire Service noted that swift action by its personnel helped to avert what could have escalated into a major explosion on the busy road.
Preliminary findings indicated that driver fatigue may have contributed to the accident.
“Initial investigation revealed that driver fatigue was a major factor that led to the accident,” the statement added.
Authorities have urged drivers, especially those transporting flammable materials, to observe traffic rules strictly and ensure they are adequately rested before embarking on long journeys.
“We urge drivers to ensure they are well-rested before embarking on long-distance journeys, as this is critical to protecting lives and property,” the Fire Service advised.
