Port Harcourt, Rivers State – A potentially deadly tanker explosion was narrowly avoided on Tuesday morning after a petroleum-laden truck overturned along Elekahia Road in Port Harcourt, a major traffic corridor linking residential areas to the industrial hub of Trans-Amadi.
The tanker reportedly fell on its side near the Nkpogu Roundabout, spilling highly flammable petroleum products across the roadway. Prompt intervention by the Rivers State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service contained the spill and dispersed hazardous fuel vapours, preventing ignition.
Residents and police assisted firefighters by diverting traffic and ensuring that no bystanders attempted to collect the spilled fuel. The rapid response averted what could have been a catastrophic fire in a densely populated area during peak morning activity, when schoolchildren and commuters were on the move.
Port Harcourt has a history of devastating tanker explosions that have claimed lives and destroyed property. Last year, the Federal Government strengthened the city’s fire response capacity with additional firefighting trucks and equipment, while Governor Siminalayi Fubara led a major overhaul of the state fire service system.
Authorities praised the coordinated efforts, emphasizing that vigilance, community support, and rapid emergency response are critical in preventing tragedies on high-risk roads.
