The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspected gunrunner and seized a large cache of ammunition in Cross River State, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Kelvin Ebikeniye Dugo, was apprehended at Ivara Esu Estate in Odukpani Local Government Area following credible intelligence about his plan to purchase 832 rounds of live ammunition from another suspected arms dealer, Azenda Barnabas (alias Jagaban), based in Aliade, Benue State.

Security sources revealed that the ammunition was concealed in food items. Alongside the rounds, operatives recovered two empty AK-47 magazines, underscoring the sophistication of the attempted arms transfer.

“The DSS has intensified its pursuit of such criminals, launching sustained operations across the federation. This successful operation is one of many nationwide efforts highlighting our commitment to dismantling gunrunning syndicates and curbing illegal arms proliferation,” a source said.

The arrest marks a significant blow to illegal arms networks operating across states, reinforcing the DSS’ strategy to intercept weapons before they fuel violence or criminal activity.
