Police in Ebonyi State have arrested three men accused of attempting to disrupt the Student Union Government (SUG) elections at Ebonyi State University.
The chaos erupted during the announcement of results when the suspects allegedly opened fire to disperse students gathered at the venue. One student was hit by a stray bullet and rushed to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA), Abakaliki, where he is receiving treatment.
Police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Tuesday. He identified the suspects as Lawrence Azubuike, Ibe Kenneth, and Njoku Joshua, adding that a locally made pistol was recovered from the scene.
“The prompt response of our operatives prevented further violence. The suspects are now in custody and will face prosecution after investigations,” Ukandu said.
Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, assured the public that the command remains committed to safeguarding peace and security across the state.
The student election, meant to be a democratic exercise, nearly descended into tragedy before police intervention restored order.
