Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after being temporarily released to attend his mother’s burial.
El-Rufai was granted compassionate leave on March 27, 2026, following the death of his mother in Cairo. Her funeral took place in Abuja on Sunday, attracting a host of prominent political figures.
Upon his return, El-Rufai was re-arraigned before the Kaduna State High Court over a separate corruption-related charge filed by the ICPC. However, the proceedings were adjourned to April 10, 2026, after the absence of a co-defendant prevented the case from continuing.
Authorities have reiterated that El-Rufai’s temporary release was strictly for the funeral, and his re-arraignment underscores the ongoing legal processes surrounding former public officials in Nigeria.
