A Magistrate’s Court in Abuja is hearing a case against Ms. Uche David Obinali, 49, a businesswoman and niece of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, over allegations of defrauding American-Nigerian philanthropist and politician Prince Daniel Kanu of N127 million.
Court documents allege that Obinali obtained money under false pretenses, including $20,000 and N10 million, claiming the funds were needed to repatriate her late brother’s remains from the United States for burial. Police investigations revealed that her brother had already been buried in Texas, USA, in March 2024, over a year before the alleged fraud.
Kanu filed a petition at Garki Police Station on September 23, 2025, accusing Obinali of fabricating the burial story and fraudulently acquiring assets from him, including a Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, a Toyota Sienna bus, three shipping containers, and cash, totaling N127 million.
Obinali, who resides in Abuja, was arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court in Wuse Zone 6 on charges of criminal breach of trust and cheating. She was granted bail pending trial but was remanded at Keffi Correctional Centre after failing to meet bail conditions. Proceedings are set to resume on November 11, 2025.
