ADC chieftain questions legality of Abuja polls after APC’s sweeping victory

Fresh controversy has trailed the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, with a senior figure in the African Democratic Congress alleging that the polls were conducted under an unpublished law.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claimed the elections lacked legal transparency because the gazetted version of the Electoral Act 2026 had not been made publicly available.

Okonkwo made the remarks during an appearance on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, while reacting to the outcome of the FCT polls, in which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) won five out of the six Area Councils.

‘Against the rule of law’

Questioning the legal foundation of the exercise, Okonkwo argued that a law must be formally published before it can be implemented.

“Nigerians should not be carried away by what this dubious APC is doing. Up till now, the gazetted copy of the Electoral Act 2026 is not out,” he said.

“APC is intentionally hiding everything so that Nigerians do not even understand until it is too late.

“The FCT election was conducted under an unknown law. And this is against the rule of law. Before you implement a law on the people, it must be publicly published.”

His comments add to the growing national debate surrounding the Electoral Act 2026, which has drawn scrutiny over the speed of its passage and implementation.

Mounting political tension

The FCT Area Council elections were closely watched as a political test ahead of future national contests. The APC’s dominant performance has been welcomed by party loyalists but challenged by opposition figures questioning procedural transparency.

As controversy builds, attention is likely to focus on whether the final gazetted copy of the Electoral Act has been formally released and whether any legal challenges will follow.

The Federal Government and the APC have yet to publicly respond to Okonkwo’s claims as of the time of filing this report.
