The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a strategic redeployment of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as Nigeria prepares for Saturday’s area council elections.

FCT Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye announced the reshuffle, emphasising that the move is designed to enhance security, maintain law and order, and ensure the elections are conducted peacefully.

“The redeployment is meant to strengthen operational readiness and guarantee that officers discharge their duties fairly and professionally,” Dantawaye said, adding that the police are committed to a smooth, orderly voting process before, during, and after the elections.

Movement Restrictions and Voter Guidance

Authorities have imposed a restriction of movement from 8:00 pm on Friday, February 20, until 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 21. Exceptions are limited to essential service providers and accredited election officials, with the aim of securing polling units and preventing disruptions.

Residents have been urged to remain calm, participate responsibly in the elections, and report any suspicious activity. Officers affected by the redeployment were instructed to report to their new assignments immediately.

“The cooperation of residents is vital. We appeal to everyone to exercise patience, respect the law, and play their part in ensuring a peaceful election,” Dantawaye added.

Ensuring a Smooth Election in the FCT

The FCT area council elections are expected to attract high voter turnout across all divisions. The police redeployment is part of broader efforts to deter electoral violence, secure polling units, and reassure residents of a credible, transparent electoral process.
