Residents of Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State, who fled their homes over years of insurgent activity, have begun returning after the Nigerian Army and other security agencies successfully ousted the criminals. For five years, insurgents posing as freedom fighters controlled several communities, imposing fines before families could hold marriages or burial ceremonies.
The recent military operation led to the capture of the insurgents’ commander, Mr Ifeanyi Okorienta, also known as Gentle de Yahoo, and the liberation of occupied communities. Returning residents have expressed deep gratitude to the Nigerian Army for restoring peace and security.
In a letter conveyed through the office of the Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Ihiala Local Government Area, Pastor Azuka Innocent Okolie, the community thanked Col BM Yakubu, Commander of the 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support), Onitsha, and his soldiers for their courage and professionalism. The letter highlighted the army’s role in safeguarding lives, responding swiftly to threats, and collaborating with community leaders to strengthen local security initiatives, such as the Agu Neche Mba Security.
The letter read in part: “Your troops have stood firm in the face of danger, responding swiftly to distress calls, confronting threats, and maintaining calm even in the most challenging situations. Beyond your military efficiency, we are particularly grateful for the human and approachable conduct of your soldiers, whose respectful interaction with civilians has built trust and renewed confidence among our people. Streets once abandoned have come alive again, businesses and markets are reopening, and our people can live without fear.”
Communities affected by the five-year insecurity include Mbosi, Azia, Orsumoghu, Lilu, and Ubuluisuzo in Anambra, and Orsuihiteukwa and Awoidemmili in Imo State. Residents have hailed the army’s intervention as a turning point in restoring normalcy and rebuilding livelihoods across the region.
