From 1993 to 2025: How Akuatuegwu’s Political Rise Mirrors Tinubu’s Legendary Journey

The political evolution of Chief Charles Orie, widely known as Akuatuegwu, reflects a fascinating parallel to the rise of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — both men sharing reputations as power brokers whose influence has shaped generations of political leaders.

Back in 1993, during Nigeria’s historic presidential contest between Chief M.K.O. Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC), a young Charles Orie was already making political waves in Imo State.

Barely in his twenties and serving as the Traditional Prime Minister of the Ohaji Nation, Akuatuegwu became the coordinator of Tofa’s campaign in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area. His leadership, energy, and personal financial backing made him one of the most influential NRC figures in the state — funding campaign activities, mobilising supporters, and holding strategy sessions that solidified his growing political base.

That early involvement laid the foundation for a political career defined by loyalty, consistency, and strategic influence.

When the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged in 1998, Akuatuegwu was among its early power figures in Imo State, helping to shape candidate selection and political direction both locally and statewide.

Over the decades, his political reach has played a decisive role in the emergence of:

  • Local government chairmen and councillors from Ohaji/Egbema,
  • Members of the Imo State House of Assembly,
  • House of Representatives members for his federal constituency,
  • Senators from his zone,
  • And even successive governors of Imo State.

Yet, despite his deep-rooted influence, Akuatuegwu has often chosen to remain behind the scenes, supporting others rather than pursuing personal glory — a quality that invites comparisons with President Tinubu’s political legacy.

Like Tinubu, whose strategic mentorship and political alliances led to the emergence of many of Nigeria’s current leaders, Akuatuegwu has built an enduring structure of loyalty and empowerment.

Tinubu’s famous declaration — “Emi l’okan” (“It is my turn”) — symbolised the culmination of years of sacrifice and political investment. Many in Imo State now believe that Chief Charles Orie stands at a similar turning point.

As the 2027 Imo governorship race draws near, political observers and supporters alike echo a familiar phrase with renewed conviction:
“Emi l’okan, Akuatuegwu.”
